What does organic mean?
Organic farming is a modern, sustainable agriculture system which maintains the long-term fertility of the soil and uses less of the earth's finite resources to produce tasty healthy food. It is a balanced system that ensures soil, plants and animals enjoy the best conditions for development and growth.
How is organic food different?
We believe that food produced using organic methods of agriculture is safe, tasty food. Rachel's Organically produced food is pure and free from chemical and artificial additives. Organic food is healthy, nutritious and wholesome.
Why is organic dairy produce important to our diet?
Organic dairy produce is an important natural source of protein, calcium, riboflavin and other B vitamins and vitamin A. Yogurt is also rich in other minerals and health giving elements. Calcium promotes healthy bones and teeth and is especially important to growing children and young women. Lack of calcium can lead to osteoporosis in later life.
What is a live culture?
All yogurt is made using live bacteria but not all yogurt contains active live cultures that can benefit the body. Our yogurts have extra health-promoting bacteria added, which help strengthen body defences, aids digestion and promotes general well-being.
How is organic food regulated?
The integrity of organic food is safeguarded by international legislation. The United Kingdom Register of Organic Food Standards (UKROFS) is the British control body for the organic sector. Food sold as organic anywhere in the EU must be certified as produced under an approved system authorised by an official inspection and certification service. The Soil Association is the largest and most respected of the UKROFS validating bodies. Its symbol on food is the consumer's assurance of the best organic quality.
Why is organic farming better for animals?
Good animal health and the prevention of disease is promoted by the pursuit of high animal welfare standards, appropriate feeding and housing systems, good preventative management and high stockmanship skills.
How does organic farming protect wildlife?
Organic farming helps protect wildlife and ensures the health of the land so that future generations can continue producing food for years to come. Organic farmers use composted manure and other natural resources rather than artificial fertilizers to replenish and enrich the soil. They grow a mixture of grasses, clover and herbs for biodiversity and animal nutrition. Good husbandry, including crop rotation, ploughing and hedgerow care, avoids the use of weedkillers and allows natural predators such as insects and birds to control pests without chemicals.
Where does Rachel's stand on genetic modifications?
Rachel's Organic Dairy does not use any genetically modified ingredients or derivatives in its products and we fully support the campaign spearheaded by the Soil Association in promoting GM free food.
