Cookie Policy
What is a Cookie?
A cookie is a small file, typically of letters and numbers, downloaded on to a device when the user accesses certain websites. Cookies are then sent back to originating website on each subsequent visit. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device. The Regulations apply to cookies and also to similar technologies for storing information.
There are different types of cookies:
Session and persistent cookies:
Cookies can expire at the end of a browser session (from when a user opens the browser window to when they exit the browser) or they can be stored for longer. The Regulations apply to both types of cookies:
Session cookies:
Allow websites to link the actions of a user during a browser session. They may be used for a variety of purposes such as remembering what a user has put in their shopping basket as they browse around a site. They could also be used for security when a user is accessing internet banking or to facilitate use of webmail. These session cookies expire after a browser session so would not be stored longer term. For this reason session cookies may sometimes be considered less privacy intrusive than persistent cookies.
Persistent cookies:
Are stored on a user’s device in between browser sessions which allows the preferences or actions of the user across a site (or in some cases across different websites) to be remembered. Persistent cookies may be used for a variety of purposes including remembering users’ preferences and choices when using a site or to target advertising.
First and third party cookies:
Whether a cookie is ‘first’ or ‘third’ party refers to the website or domain placing the cookie. First party cookies are set by a website visited by the user – the website displayed in the URL window. Third party cookies are cookies that are set by a domain other than the one being visited by the user. If a user visits a website and a separate company sets a cookie through that website this would be a third party cookie.
Strictly necessary cookies:
These are “strictly necessary” for websites to work, and user consent is not required. In the UK websites use one strictly necessary cookie: asp.net_SessionId. This creates a session ID for the user, so that the system can identify the user as a unique and individual user. This information is not used or stored outside of our systems, and is held only while the user is accessing account pages and other pages which require unique and secure access. Without this cookie, such access could not remain secure, so it is very important. Our website also uses Google Analytics Cookies. The Google Analytics Cookies (named _utma; _utmb; _utmc; _utmz) used on our website are used to collect information about how visitors use our site.
We use the information to compile reports and to help us improve the site. The cookies collect information in an anonymous form, including the number of visitors to the site, where visitors have come to the site from and the pages they visited. Should we use cookies in this way, you will not be personally identified and any information collected will only be used in aggregate form for reporting purposes. To find out more, please click here to view Google’s Privacy Policy.
Other Cookies are useful as they help us to recognise you when you visit this Website so that you do not have to re-enter your password and user ID each time you access this Website. Cookies may also be used to note the pages that you visit and any preferences you choose during the visit. This will allow us to enhance your experience of this Website, present you with a personalised version of this Website and improve the website.
You are not obliged to accept any cookies and most browsers allow you to decline the acceptance of cookies. Our website allows you to choose whether you give consent for the use of cookies on our website. Should you decide not to allow cookies, please look at the Help menu on your browser or contact your system administrator. We will ask for your consent to the use of cookies as set out in this Privacy and Cookies Policy when you first access the Website and if we introduce any new cookies to the Website, where required to do so by applicable legislation.
Please note that if you disable any cookies, certain services or pages on this Website may not be available to you. For further information on how to turn off or opt out of non-mandatory cookies, please click here.
